El Salvador & Legal Tender BTC

A New Era Dawns
Charitable Endeavors

Bitcoin was created with the intent of functioning as a medium of exchange. The bitcoin white paper itself calls bitcoin a "purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution."

Bitcoin has struggled to live up to this status since the genesis block was mined on January 3, 2009. Over 12 years later, on September 7, 2021, Bitcoin achieved a major milestone in being recognized as legal tender in El Salvador. This move enabled it to be recognized as a true electronic version of cash within the country.

The Free Republic of Liberland is a huge supporter of El Salvador's move to recognize the first cryptocurrency for what it was always intended to be: an electronic currency. Liberland understands the value of blockchain technology and how it can revolutionize the global finance.

Promoting the adoption of decentralized means of exchange which put power back in the hands of the people is a core tenet of Liberland's founding philosophy. We believe that the onset of mainstream, national adoption of cryptocurrency opens the door to a new era in human history, where anyone worldwide can instantly engage in financial transactions with anyone else, without any intermediary.

In line with this, Liberland stood behind our ethos and put forth an initiative to run a fundraiser powered exclusively by Bitcoin. No fiat currencies or intermediaries were involved with the initiative. This move shows how cryptocurrency can be used to rapidly enable global humanitarian aid projects.

Liberland supports all blockchain projects, always accepting donations in and often conducting relief projects using all manner of cryptocurrencies. However, in honor of El Salvador's new policy, we are running this initiative solely with BTC. A charitable aid project to support the San Salvador Children's Hospital is the first of its kind - donations solicited exclusively in BTC and sent to the recipient in BTC, as a legal currency in the recipient's country.
